Why This Site Exists
Connecticut treats most custody and case information as public. The trouble is that it sits in many different places, and the labels do not always match what people expect. One fact trips up almost everyone: Hartford County has no county sheriff jail and no county roster. Back in 1968 the state folded all of its county jails and prisons into one agency, the Department of Correction. Every person in state custody, whether they are waiting for trial or already sentenced, is searched through the same statewide system.
This site exists to make that map clear. It explains that people held before trial in the Hartford area show up at Hartford Correctional Center, that sentenced men can be held at Robinson Correctional Institution or MacDougall-Walker Correctional Institution, and that federal and immigration detainees live in entirely separate databases.
